My name is Dan Ariely and I'm a social scientist specializing in behavioral economics at Duke University. Born in New York, I spent many years in Israel and now spend time in both Israel and the U.S. While I'm American, I also feel very Israeli. I'm a secular Jew yet deeply connected to my Jewish identity.

My upbringing was steeped in stories about family members who fled Russia for Germany, and then narrowly escaped Germany—some to the U.S., others to Israel.

Recently, I've encountered what I perceive as increasing incidents of anti-Semitism. As a social scientist, I understand that changing deeply held beliefs is challenging, and I am not aiming to change anyone’s opinions

At the same time, I am concerned with what is going on and I want to understand it better. My goal isn't to convince anyone but rather to understand other peoples’ views.

So, here’s my request: If you hold anti-Semitic views or know someone who does, I want to have real discussions about these topics. To be clear, I don't want to argue or persuade; I simply want to understand. There are many people with anti-Semitic ideas worldwide, and I hope that I can learn a lot from listening to them carefully.
